Exploded Skull
The creation of an exploded skull, sometimes known as the Beauchêne method, is a meticulous process used in anatomical study. It begins with thoroughly cleaning the skull, including bleaching and degreasing if necessary. The skull is then boiled or macerated (soaked in water) to soften and loosen the sutures, the fibrous joints connecting the various bones. Once the sutures have sufficiently loosened, the individual bones are carefully disarticulated by hand while still wet. After drying, the disarticulated bones are mounted and displayed with spacing between them, often using wires or strips of celluloid. This allows for the intricate study of each bone of the skull and how they fit together.
